Course Description

Tibetan Odyssey: The Exile of the Dalai Lama and His People (HIS 98)
The exile of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans, which began in 1959, is a story that has moved beyond the mere survival of a small group of refugees into a much more inspiring and fascinating phenomenon. The Tibetans have built their community into a unique nationin- exile that is without borders, and have made their Buddhist culture available and accessible to the larger world community. Even on the political front, they have become a global favorite, drawing support over a wide range of issues. This course will attempt to understand the reasons behind their successes and the global changes that are partly facilitating their efforts; as well as what this virtual Tibet tells us of the Tibetans, their culture and history, and their leader, the Dalai Lama.
