Travel Writing (EGL 145)
Walter Benjamin wrote, “And because distance, when it snows, leads no longer out into the world but within, so Baghdad and Babylon, Acre and Alaska, Tromsö and Transvaal were places within me.” In other words, there is more than one way to travel: we can voyage through the exterior world and through the landscapes of our inner lives. Using these two notions of travel, this course focuses on getting stories from our own life journeys onto the page. How do we write about an exciting trip without draining the excitement out of it? Where did our families come from and what did they leave behind? We will examine successful nonfiction travel writing, and we will use other genres to expand our technical repertoires. Above all, we will attentively workshop our own pieces, helping each other get closer to where we wish to be.
