Course Description

Humanity - An Outsider’s View (ANTH 18)
This course offers an overview of Homo sapiens, the human race. By using the perspective of an imaginary, “outside” observer, this course will survey humanity’s universal biological and cultural traits: the common practices, behaviors, and beliefs that define our species; and the sources of diversity across our species. Along the way, we will draw upon materials from both modern and ancient populations and address the following topics: food, diet, and related physiology; architecture and shelter; art, literature, and music; bodily adornments including jewelry, painting, tattooing, piercing, and other modifications of the human body; universals in religion, cosmology, and philosophy; prenatal and childbirth practices across humanity; the history and nature of human language and writing systems; as well as politics and warfare among humans (and their nearest relatives, the great apes).

Matthew Jobin
Lecturer in Anthropology
Matthew Jobin received a PhD in anthropological sciences from Stanford. His work integrates computational and laboratory methods in order to provide statistical pictures of human prehistory. His most recent research has been focused on novel approaches for investigating the parameters of prehistoric human life, including the comparison of various models of ancient human migration and the estimation of the size of prehistoric populations.

Timothy King
Anthropologist; Archaeologist; Epigrapher
Timothy King received a PhD from the Department of Anthropology at Stanford. His regional focus is ancient Mesoamerica, in particular the ancient and modern Maya and the ancient metropolis of Teotihuacán in central Mexico. His recent work has included the decipherment of the newly discovered writing system at Teotihuacán and the constellation and astronomical systems of the ancient Maya. He recently worked in Estonia, developing the first formal anthropology program in the Baltic.
